As a school district administrator, you have multiple target audiences you need to communicate with, and special care should be given to using language that is familiar, relatable and understandable to all of them. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you get your next newsletter ready for distribution or write that next letter to parents:
- Don’t assume that parents know or understand what may be common language or processes for your school district. Common Core? Grading systems? Online portals? Repetitive messaging and explanations are imperative to truly reaching your target audience.
- New programs, charter schools or services? Develop and implement a campaign that is not a one-and-done deal. It takes multiple “touches” to reach your target audience. Make your messaging resonate with your audience by putting yourself in their shoes to address their main concerns. Make your content relevant to them while clearly articulating your information.
- Remember your internal audience can make or break you. What are you doing to proactively communicate changes and updates to them? Are you engaging your internal audiences or simply talking at them? Try something new for the new year. Incorporate more visuals, storytelling, invite questions and share good news.
