Social media stories for business

Snapchat was the first social media platform to introduce the concept of “stories,” which are short clips, about 10 seconds, that only live online for 24 hours before they expire. Since Snapchat invented stories, Instagram and Facebook have both adopted stories on their platforms as well. Should your business be utilizing the stories feature?

While Facebook is still the most popular social platform, it is least popular in terms of stories. By far, Instagram stories have dominated the category, even topping Snapchat. With Snapchat only having 187 million daily active users compared to Instagram’s 500 million, we might be seeing the fall of Snapchat on the horizon.

Stories are a way to combine refined content with a behind-the-scenes look at your business.

  • Does your business sell a product? Do a demonstration series on your story.
  • Does your business offer a service? Use your story to show a before and after.

It also gives you a way to obtain valuable feedback from your audience using the poll feature. They can be a bit more spontaneous and show a different side of your business. This feature allows you to ask a question and create two possible responses.

Poll question examples

Question: What kind of content do you prefer?

Poll choices: Product demos OR Before & Afters

Question: What color should our next book be?

Poll choices: Blue OR Red

Question: Which of these products do you use more?

Poll choices: Hand sanitizer OR Hand soap

When a user makes a choice, you will see who chose what option and which option got the most votes. This is an easy and effective way to make sure you are generating the content your audience wants to see.

If you are considering using stories for your business, start by following a few popular accounts and looking for a pattern on their story. Most businesses who are using stories regularly will post about 7-13 times per day. But remember, just like any other social media platform, you should always have a general idea of what content you want to post each day! Never leave social media up to chance!
